The Warrumbungle National Park is just wondrous, and the perfect destination for a road trip. This easy tour – suitable for those new to towing and the more experienced – comes with spectacular scenery at every turn (make sure you bring a camera). And there’s nothing quite like camping under the starriest of skies in Australia’s only Dark Sky Park.

We start by heading to Coonabarabran on the edge of the park. Besides top-class 4WD tracks, you’ll also enjoy an evening at the Warrumbungle Observatory to gaze at the heavens. Then it’s on to Narrabri, taking in the sandstone caves of the Pilliga region. We’ll then spend a day discovering the spectacular natural features of the surroundings, including the hexagonal volcanic pillars of Sawn Rocks, and a trip to the top of Mount Kaputar, from which you can see a tenth of NSW.
